Pickup Ports

90 Degree Pickup Ports
come on our Summit Model

The sketches below show 45 degree pickup ports on a stern drive. They also depict the typical range that a drive is trimmed in various situations. Notice how the pickup ports will function as the drive is trimmed to various settings.  The 45 degree port on the outward trimmed position is almost facing downward, restricting the intake of water to cool your drive.

DRIVE  TRIMMED INWARDS THIS POSITION INDUCES STERN LIFT AND IS USED TO PLANE THE BOAT

<<< -------  Water Flow

DRIVE  TRIMMED LEVEL THIS POSITION LEVELS THE BOAT AND IS USED WHILE CRUISING

DRIVE  TRIMMED OUTWARD THIS POSITION INDUCES BOW LIFT AND IS USED TO MAXIMIZE SPEED

Typical 45 degree pick-up  ports

In an attempt to minimize  costs, drive cooling system manufacturers simply cut the end of the pick-up tube at a 45 degree angle.  This system might supply sufficient cooling water while you are pleasure boating, but not performance boating.  As you trim the drive outwardly, water contacts the back wall of these 45 degree pick-up  ports and is deflected up the tube at a decreasing rate until they eventually fail, at a time when they are needed the most.

Simrek's new 90 degree pickup ports

Independent testing has proven that boats require the drive to be trimmed near or past vertical in order to achieve maximum speed will cause the drive cooling system to eventually fail.  To alleviate this problem, Simrek has tested and patented a 90 degree pick-up port that forces the water to enter the tube at any trim level.  These tips are now being offered exclusively to existing Multiport Drive Shower® customers as an add on option, in sets of two, and on new showers as part of the unit and referred to as the Deluxe model.

COMPARISON OF 45 DEGREE AND 90 DEGREE PICKUP PORTS

When we first  introduced the Multiport Drive Shower®, we thought that the problem with existing cooling system lied exclusively in the water delivery  system.  We corrected that issue, but hadn't yet maximized the  water delivery system, assuming that the propeller spray would supply  the water needed.  Independent testing found this not to be the case.  The improvement was so great that we decided to apply for a US patent.

The 90 Degree Pick-up Ports that Simrek offers exclusively to Multiport  Drive Shower® customers provide a continuous supply of cooling water at any trim level.  Because the Pick-Up Port faces forward  into the stream of water going under the cavitation plate, they scoop  more water than the conventional 45 degree ports.  Instead  of failing during performance boating, they are actually at maximum efficiency.
